Understanding Hydrocephalus.

Many of you don't know what hydrocephalus is or can do. Well I'm going to tell you what it is and can do. Hydrocephalus is a condition in which the primary characteristic is excessive accumulation of fluid in the brain. Although hydrocephalus was once known as "water on the brain," the "water" is actually cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)--a clear fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. The excessive accumulation of CSF results in an abnormal widening of spaces in the brain called ventricles. This widening creates potentially harmful pressure on the tissues of the brain. The ventricular system is made up of four ventricles connected by narrow passages.. Normally, CSF flows through the ventricles, exits into cisterns (closed spaces that serve as reservoirs) at the base of the brain, bathes the surfaces of the brain and spinal cord, and then reabsorbs into the bloodstream.

It can take over peoples life or in our case, it took our sons life. Some people know what caused theirs or their childrens hydrocephalus, but we still don't know to this day why Colton had it.

I have been reading status's on facebook about children with hydro that has been in and out of the hospital. Having surgery because of an infection or a blockage in the shunt. I feel for you all. We have been there and you all shouldn't have to go through everything you are going through.

I told my husband just the other day that I now think that it is probably a blessing that God decided to take Colton. I don't want you to take me the wrong way. I do miss Colton more than anything and I do wish that he was still here. I still wouldn't trade the year we had with him for anything but I hated seeing him in so much pain. And have to go through so many surgeries.

So when you all say your prayers tonight, say one  for all the hydro kids and adults. Also for the parents of the hydro kids for strength to get through it all. Best of luck to you all!!!!!
